Buyer’s Guide
Types of Carriers
There are lots of different carriers out there, and each has a different way of carrying a baby. Some of them are relatively easy to use, while others can be a bit complex.
Wrap – While baby wraps might be a bit tricky to figure out the first couple of times that you use them, they are one of the best ways to securely carry your little one.
They also come in a variety of different fabric types depending on the season you’ll be using them. This will allow you to get one in a nice, cool, and breathable fabric for those warmer months.
Backpack – Backpack carriers are wonderful for warmer weather! First of all, they keep the kid off of you, which helps to keep you (and them) from becoming too clammy.
Most backpack carriers also come with air ventilation built into both the bag itself and the carrier portion to keep up the airflow for the both of you.
Standard – If you close your eyes and imagine a baby carrier, the standard carrier is what you envision. It holds your baby nice and close in multiple positions and can be easily adjusted by loosening or tightening the straps.
These carriers can also be purchased in a variety of fabrics, which will make it nice and easy to find one to keep you and baby nice and comfortable on those hot, humid summer days.
What To Keep In Mind When Looking For The Best Baby Carrier For Hot Weather
Just like when you buy any new kind of baby gear, there are several things to think about when you are looking for the best baby carriers for hot weather.
Comfort – You certainly wouldn’t want to wear your baby if the straps are digging into your shoulders mercilessly. Always keep an eye out for extra padding in all of the straps.
Believe me, even the biggest and toughest daddies are going to get grouchy and sore if the carrier you get doesn’t have enough padding. Even though babies don’t weigh all that much, they certainly weigh enough to cause some discomfort.
Fabric Type – Nothing is going to determine how hot you feel in a baby carrier more than the fabric that it is made out of. You’ll want to avoid heavier fabrics that offer, as these will trap in the heat from your bodies. The lighter the fabric, the cooler you’ll be.
Ventilation – If you are looking to keep yourself as cool as possible, it is a good idea to get a carrier that offers some sort of ventilation system. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy a nice bit of airflow while you lug around your little one, which will help to keep the both of you a lot more comfortable.
Positions – Some babies will like to face out. Others will like to face in. Still, others will like to be on your hip, and some others like to be on your back. Make sure to look for a baby carrier that will allow you to switch up the position of your child based on their preferences.
The idea is to get them to stay in the carrier, after all, and if they are uncomfortable, they won’t want to stay in it at all.
When and Where They Will Wear – If the dad in question only intends to wear their baby around the house, a backpack carrier wouldn’t make much sense, much like a wrap wouldn’t be too good for a walk in the woods.
You need to try to think of where the carrier will be utilized so that you have a better idea of which one will fit your needs best.
Adjustable – If you are looking to get a carrier that both mom and dad can wear, you will need to be sure to get one that is easily adjusted. This will let you set up your baby in the best way possible to keep the both of you as cool as possible.
Easy To Use – While some of the more complicated carriers are great, they can be difficult to learn how to use properly. It is always better to buy a foolproof type of system that has a very small learning curve so that you won’t just end up frustrated by it.
Top Five Baby Carriers For Hot Weather
1. Boba 4G Carrier
The Good: This is definitely a contender for the title of the best baby carrier for hot weather! It is designed with your baby’s (and your) comfort in mind! The straps are easy to adjust and will fit most mommas pretty well.
This carrier is made with 100% cotton, which makes it nice and breathable. The fabric is relatively thin, which lets through a nice breeze while you are going about your business, keeping you and baby nice and cool.
I also love that this carrier can be used from infancy all the way up to a toddler. Not only will it help to keep you cool, but it will help to keep you on a budget, since this will be the only carrier that you’ll need.
The Bad: While this carrier has a lot going for it, there is one minor issue. When you use this carrier, you only have two carrying choices. You can either have your baby on your front or back, and they must be looking towards you.
Now, this arrangement might work fine for your littles, but I know that some babies like to look out when they are in a carrier, which they could not do with this one.
The Long and Short of It: This carrier, which you can view here, is made with comfortable and breathable materials that should keep you nice and comfortable while lugging around your little one.
2. Lillebaby The Complete Airflow 360° Ergonomic Six-Position Baby & Child Carrier
The Good: If your baby likes to look out when they are in their carrier, then this is the one for you. This carrier from Lillebaby allows you to carry your baby in six different positions, which will help you to keep them happy.
It is also made from fully breathable materials. This makes it an ideal choice for hot and humid weather. Even on the hottest of days, you should be able to get a bit of air between you and your baby, which will help to keep you as cool and comfortable as can be.
The Bad: Even though this carrier will allow you to shift your kid into different positions, it isn’t always the easiest thing in the world to do. Some of the positions, such as the hip carry, will take a lot of getting used to before you can use them comfortably.
The Long and Short of It: The Airflow allows plenty of airflow and different carrying positions. However, some of the positions are harder to utilize than others and will take a bit of practice to master.
3. Ergobaby 360 All Carry Positions Award-Winning Cool Mesh Ergonomic Baby Carr
The Good: Ahhh, the Ergo! This has long been THE classic carrier on the market, though this new version, which you can view here, is by far the best the company has created to date.
Not only does it offer the versatility to carry in multiple different positions quickly and easily, but this is also a great carrier for hot days.
This is because of the large mesh panels surrounding the front and sides. These panels allow tons of air to flow through, which will help to keep your baby and you cool and comfy.
The Bad: The only drawback to this otherwise excellent carrier is that it is somewhat difficult to put on and off solo. The strap behind the head is especially difficult to fasten and unfasten unless you are extremely flexible.
The Long and Short of It: The Ergo 360 is a wonderful carrier that will help to keep you comfy on those long hot summer days. Just make sure that you have someone to help you put it on and take it off so that you can do it correctly.
4. Boba Wrap Baby Carrier
The Good: As you might have guessed by now, I have a bit of a fascination with wraps. I have always thought that they were so cool, even though they are tricky to figure out. The thought of keeping a baby so close and snuggled up just warms this mama’s heart!
Thankfully, though, because of its cotton fabric, this wrap from Boba will keep you nice and cool, even in the hottest weather. So you’ll get the best of both worlds! With this wrap, you can keep your baby close and secure, while also keeping them cool.
The Bad: There isn’t too much to complain about with this one, other than it can be exceedingly difficult to figure out at first. Unlike a standard carrier, a wrap has a pretty steep learning curve. However, if you can figure it out, you won’t regret it!
The Long and Short of It: This wrap will keep your baby comfortable and close, as long as you can figure out how to utilize it properly.
5. Gemini Performance Baby Carrier By Beco
The Good: This carrier by Beco, which you can check out here, is a bare-bones approach to a carrier. The majority of the materials used for this carrier is mesh, making it nice and breathable, which is ideal for those super-hot days.
You can also carry your little in four different positions, making this a fine, versatile option for carrying your kid.
The Bad: While all of that mesh will help to keep you nice and cool, it also makes this carrier more apt to stretch out and become loose than any of the other carriers that I looked with.
If you want to use this with an older child, just make sure that you check the fit regularly to guarantee a safe wearing experience.
The Long and Short of It: This mesh carrier from Beco will keep you comfortable and cool while you carry your infant. However, just make sure to check it regularly since the mesh will stretch easily. And The Winner Is...
After lots of careful consideration, I have decided that the Boba 4G Carrier is one of the best baby carriers for hot weather out there today. It is made out of super breathable 100% cotton, making it ideal for even the hottest days of the year. It is also a terrific value.
This carrier can be used from infancy all the way through the toddler years. Add all of this to the fact that it is super-duper comfy to wear and you have a great carrier. I highly recommend that you check it out!
