Buyer's Guide
Uses For Baby Washcloths
Washcloths can be used for a few different jobs, and the type of washcloths you’ll need will be determined by how you intend to use them.
For Bath Time – Alright, let’s get the obvious one out of the way, shall we? A washcloth can be utilized to, you know, wash your child. These cloths will usually be on the thicker side of things and really soft. This allows them to soothe your baby during their bath, as well as hold plenty of bubbly suds.
For Changing Time – An often overlooked use for washcloths is as a replacement for disposable wipes during diaper changes.
I personally have done this, and it works out really well! All you need to do is mix up a cleaning solution to spray on the cloths, wipe away the mess, and then wash them for another use.
If you are looking to save some money, which, of course, you are, you just had a baby; then this is a great way to get it started!
What To Keep In Mind When Looking For A Washcloth For Your Baby
Although it might seem like a simple purchase to make, you need to consider a few important factors when you are looking for the best baby washcloths.
Material – When you are out washcloth shopping, you’ll have tons of different material choices, with cotton being the most common. However, you might want to look for some bamboo cloths, as they are extremely soft, stain resistant, and much easier to keep clean than other materials.
Softness – Unlike you or me, a baby has extremely soft and supple skin. I cannot even imagine how much it would hurt their delicate little skin to use a regular washcloth on them. For a baby, the softer the cloth, the better it will work.
This softness helps in two very important ways. First off, it will help to keep your baby happy while they are in their tub since it won’t irritate their supple skin. Secondly, babies are famous for hiding extra dirt in all their little rolls. A soft cloth will slide into these rolls with ease, allowing you to clean them out when you wash your child properly.
Size – Babies are not overly large, so obviously you don’t need a huge washcloth, right? Well, yes and no. Yes, if you are going to be using the cloth for their bath then you won’t need a large cleaning cloth. A smaller cloth will allow you to get into all of their little nooks and crannies more effectively than a large one would.
But if you want to use the cloths for baby wipes, then you might answer no to the above question.
Look, there is no way of sugar coating this, sometimes your kid is going to have a poop explosion! IT WILL BE EVERYWHERE! In a time like that, you don’t want to be reaching for something the size of a tissue!
A larger cloth will allow you to more quickly and efficiently defuse their stink bomb and get them into some clean clothes.
Colors – When you are choosing your cloths’ color, try to keep their intended use in the back of your mind. If, for instance, they will only be used for bath time, then feel free to choose whatever color array is pleasing to your personal pallet.
If, however, you intend to utilize these cloths for diaper changes, it might not be a bad idea to go for some darker shades. This will help you to make sure that you won’t see an alarming amount of stains each and every time you give them a look over.
Top Five Baby Wash Cloths
1. Bamboo Baby Washcloths
The Good: These are easily the best baby washcloths out there today! They are made with bamboo fibers, which in addition to being extremely soft and gentle on a baby’s sensitive skin, are both antibacterial and hypoallergenic.
These properties lend themselves well to washcloths, as it makes them stay cleaner for longer, regardless of how they are used.
I also love the colors! You can get this set of cloths in packs of pink, blue, and green/yellow/gray. Talk about variety! These colors, which you can see here, will help to keep stains hidden, even if you use the cloths to clean up the messiest of messes.
The Bad: However, when you do need to wash them, these cloths need to be put in your washing machine on a delicate cycle. Otherwise, they are very likely to fray on the edges, due to the extreme softness of the materials used to manufacture them.
The Long and Short of It: I personally think that these cloths are the cream of the washcloth crop, because of their soft fabric and beautiful colors. While you’ll need to be gentle with them, I would highly recommend that you give these washcloths a try!
2. Matimati Bamboo Baby Washcloths
The Good: This six pack of cloths are made of all natural bamboo, making them a clean, durable, and hypoallergenic option to keep your little one clean and fresh.
They are a nice size too. They measure ten by ten inches across, which means that these cloths are not the smallest of the small, but are not the biggest of the big either. Rather, they are in the middle size range. This keeps your options open for however you choose to use them.
The Bad: These cloths have a lot going for them. The color options are, in my opinion, not a positive feature. This pack comes with three green and three off-white cloths.
While these cloths are not offensive and could be used for a boy or a girl, they will definitely stain if you don’t clean them carefully, as both color choices are extremely light.
The Long and Short of It: These cloths are a great organic bamboo option that will help protect and clean your infant’s sensitive skin. While they are a bit on the lighter side, they should be effective for pretty much any kind of cleanup as long as you wash them carefully afterward.
3. AmazonBasics Cotton Washcloths
The Good: WHAT. A. VALUE! These 100% cotton cloths will not only help to keep your little one clean and happy, but they’ll also do wonders for your wallet.
While most other packs come with a small number of cloths, these awesome cloths come in packs of either twenty-four or sixty! And that’s not even the best part about this value. They come with this many cloths and cost the same as their competitors!
The Bad: As you might expect from a product that comes with so many in a pack, these cloths are not quite as well made as others on my list. That’s not to say that they are terrible and will fall apart after a few uses, however, but it does mean that you’ll notice them begin to unravel on the edges after a while, which, really shouldn’t affect their effectiveness too much.
The Long and Short of It: The washcloths come in huge packs, for a very reasonable price. They will, however, show wear and tear more than some of the other washcloth options available on the market today.
4. Bamboo Baby Soft Organic Washcloth Towels for Babies
The Good: Much like the cloths from above, these are made from soft and organic bamboo fibers. This makes them great for cleaning all of your baby’s delicate parts without having to worry if the fabric is too rough for them.
They are also the mid-size cloth, measuring ten by ten inches, making them a perfect fit for any use.
Another bonus for these cloths is the fact that they come with a free bag to use when you are washing them. Since bamboo cloths are extremely soft, they might break down quickly if they are washed in direct contact with hardier materials. This bag will help keep them from falling apart while they are in the washing machine.
The Bad: I am not a fan of the super white color on these cloths. As I said before, the lighter the cloth, the more likely they are to stain. Which, while not the biggest deal when you are hanging out at home, might cause you to cringe if you have to change your little one out in public.
However, you’ll have to see them for yourself to see if the color is too light for your needs.
The Long and Short of It: These cloths come with a free wash bag to help keep them from being damaged in the wash. This is because they are especially soft, which makes them great for cleaning up your little one in the bath.
5. Diggold Washcloths Organic Bamboo
The Good: These cloths are made from the same organic bamboo that I have gushed over before, with one huge difference. Can we just talk about the colors, please? This six pack of cloths comes in the most adorable pastels you’ve ever seen. Not only are these colors especially pleasing to the eye, but they will help to any staining that they might acquire along their cleaning journey.
The Bad: Unlike the other cloths I’ve featured above, these cloths are on the smaller side. Due to their smaller size, their cleaning effectiveness will be unfortunately limited.
They will still work well, but only for a small amount of time before they themselves need to be cleaned.
The Long and Short of It: While these bamboo cloths are on the smaller side size wise, they would still be an effective option for certain cleaning applications.
And The Winner Is...
After lots of careful consideration and deliberation, I have chosen to recommend the Bamboo Baby Washcloths as my pick for the best baby washcloths out there today.
They are extremely soft, hypoallergenic, and antibacterial. They also come in beautiful colors that should help to hide any stains that you might get on them. You should definitely check them out.
