Buyer's Guide
Why Do I Need An Umbrella Stroller?
As a taller parent, you might be thinking, if an umbrella stroller is so much harder to find than other stroller types, why should I even bother?
It’s a good question, but these strollers offer several distinct advantages over stroller types that you will love to take advantage of. These include:
Portable – Umbrella strollers are famous for how easy they are to take along with you as you travel. They fold up to the point where they barely take up any space at all, making them easy to stow away in your car or even on a plane.
Lightweight – Another reason that umbrella strollers are a great item to have is that they are designed to be extremely lightweight. This makes them great for travel.
This lighter design also makes them extremely maneuverable, which is a big benefit when you are trying to get through a crowded area quickly and easily.
Easy To Fold – Umbrella strollers are also known for their simplicity. They can usually be folded up with one hand, making them an ideal choice for travel and errands for a busy family.
What To Keep In Mind When Buying An Umbrella Stroller
Now that we have a more definitive idea of the awesome benefits that an umbrella stroller has to offer let’s take a look at the different features you should try to keep in mind when you are out shopping for one.
Weight – The lighter the stroller, the easier it will be to handle. Luckily for you, umbrella strollers are usually made to be extremely lightweight.
However, there are some that are really light, and if you don’t want to strain yourself on a long day of walking, make sure you get the lightest stroller you can find.
Weight Limit – However, the big drawback to the smaller and more lightweight design of this type of stroller is that they won’t be able to handle a heavier child.
Most umbrella strollers weight limits will max out around 50 lbs. or so, with some of the more expensive options going up to 55 lbs.
Height – You are trying to find a stroller for your tallness, now aren’t you? So then, it makes sense that you’d need to consider the height of the stroller.
Simply put, anything shorter than 40 inches should not be considered, or you’ll just end up hunched over all day and up all night with back pain.
Sitting Positions – It’s best if you can get a stroller that will allow your child to sit in a variety of positions. This will help you to make sure you can get your little love into a position that they’ll not only be comfy in but that they’ll hopefully fall asleep in as well.
I can tell you from experience; no two kids will fall asleep in the same way. My oldest loved to sit up in his stroller while my youngest preferred to recline. Since you don’t know your baby’s preferred position, it’s best to leave your options open.
5-Point Harness – Even though you want a lightweight and easily transportable stroller, that shouldn’t mean that you need to compromise your child’s safety.
A five point harness will help to keep your little one snug and secure inside of their stroller, regardless of the terrain you are going over.
Easy To Open And Close – Umbrella strollers are meant to be easy to use, even if you have your hands full. That’s why you ought to make sure that the stroller you are looking into is quick and easy to fold up.
Maneuverability – The very best umbrella stroller for tall parents is going to have specialized wheels that rotate 360 degrees with ease.
This will make the stroller simple to manage, making it ideal for crowded streets or bump riddles sidewalks where you need to avoid a litany of hazards as you and your little one are out and about for errands or a family walk.
Accessories – While certainly not a deal breaker, a stroller that has cup holders, toy loops, extendable and retractable sun shades, and extra storage space is always a more desirable option when compared to more basic strollers. However, this is up to your personal preference.
Top Five Umbrella Strollers
1. Graco Breaze Click Connect Stroller
The Good: This stroller right here, just might be the best umbrella stroller for tall parents out there! It is, obviously, taller than your average umbrella stroller, which is super important in this case! However, that isn’t the only place that this awesome stroller shines!
One of its best features is that it the stroller can be used on its own, or you can click your baby’s car seat into it, as long as your seat is a Graco. This is so cool! Usually, a feature like this is only found on the biggest and heaviest of strollers, so to see it in an umbrella is really impressive.
This stroller can also be easily folded up and opened with one hand, making it an ideal choice for a mom on-the-go!
The Bad: While there is a lot to love about this stroller, one of its only drawbacks is that its weight limit is only 50 lbs., while some other choices on the market can go a bit heavier. As I said, this is not a huge deal, because most children won’t weigh 50 pounds until they are four or five years old. By then, they’ll most likely be too tall for the stroller as well anyway.
The Long and Short of It: This stroller, which you can look at here, is taller than average and can be used with your child’s car seat. While its weight limit is lower than some other strollers, it is a great choice for tall parents that I highly recommend you check out!
The Good: Another great umbrella stroller option for taller parents is this one, which you can view here, from Summer Infant. This stroller features one of the largest seating areas of any of the strollers out there, making for a much more comfy, cozy, and secure ride for your little one.
Something else that I really liked about this stroller is its sun visor. Not only can you expand and retract it, but you can take it off completely, which is nice because it allows you to get a better view of your baby while out and about. It will also let your kid see you as well, which is a big help if they experience separation anxiety when they cannot see you.
The Bad: While this stroller comes with a cup holder, which is great, it feels a little loose. I’m not sure if I would trust to put something heavy or hot in there, as there is a pretty big risk of it falling out or off.
The Long and Short of It: This is easy to use the stroller with tons of great features. The holder comes off a bit too easy for my taste but should do just fine under the right circumstances.
3. UPPAbaby G-LUXE Stroller
The Good: UPPAbaby has long been synonymous with high-quality strollers, and this is not different. It is extremely durable, and in all honesty, doesn’t drive like an umbrella stroller at all. Rather, it feels like a much heavily constructed one, which is great if you intend to use your stroller on somewhat rougher terrain than your average city sidewalk.
Due to its formidable design, this stroller can be used for children that weigh all the way up to 55 lbs. While this might not sound like a lot more than my previous selections, what this extra five pounds of weight really means is another year or two of use for the stroller, which enhances its value dramatically.
The Bad: This stroller offers several sitting positions, your baby might have a bit of trouble sitting up all the way, even in the fully upright position. If you have a nosy little baby who wants always to see what’s going on, then they might have to strain themselves to get the best view constantly.
The Long and Short of It: This stroller, which you can see here, is an absolute beast of an umbrella stroller. It is durably built and strong enough to hold a child all the way up to 55 lbs.
4. JOOVY New Groove Ultralight Umbrella Stroller
The Good: The JOOVY New Groove, which you can look into here, is a good lightweight option for taller parents. It weighs a mere 14 lbs. but can hold a child up to 55 lbs. like the UPPAbaby, while only costing quite a bit less. It also has an easily retractable sun shade with a see through the window that allows you to keep an eye on your little one even when the shade is out.
The Bad: Unlike the other umbrella strollers I looked at for this list, the JOOVY was a bit tricky to open and close. I found that it could only be accomplished with both hands, which might not be possible if you have your little one with you.
The Long and Short of It: A lightweight and well-built stroller, the JOOVY is a bit tricky to open and close, but otherwise a great value for taller parents.
5. UPPAbaby G-LITE Stroller
The Good: The G-Lite stroller from UPPAbaby is just that, light! It is one of the lightest strollers that I found but is still really well-made. It features a breathable mesh seat, which you can view here, making it ideal for those warm summer strolls. This will help to keep your kid comfy and cool, even on the hottest of days.
The Bad: While the mesh seat might be a blessing in the heat, it will quickly turn to a curse in the cold. It will also allow dust, dirt, and mud onto any items you have stowed down below pretty easily.
The Long and Short of It: A durable, lightweight, and breezy stroller, the G-Lite is best suited to use in warm (and clean) locations.
And The Winner Is...
After careful deliberation, I have concluded that the Graco Breaze Click Connect Stroller is the best umbrella stroller for tall parents on the market today! It’s tall and easy to use design make it an umbrella stroller that you should definitely check out, and I highly recommend that you do!
