Buyer's Guide

Types of Carriers

There are lots of different variations on how you can carry your little one, and I have chosen to focus on the three that I have found to be the most comfortable and easy to use with my kids.

1. Modified Wrap

I have tried a regular wrap carrier, and for the life of me, I could never figure them out! Luckily, they’ve come out with simple and easy to use versions that keep you baby nice and close, without all the crazy wrapping instructions.

2. Backpack

I love to go hiking, and this type of carrier is awesome for bringing the little one along! A good backpack carrier will make it feel like your kid weighs nothing at all, and will keep them cozy and content while you explore the great outdoors.

3. Standard

If you close your eyes and imagine a baby carrier, the standard carrier is what you envision. It holds your baby nice and close in multiple positions and can be easily adjusted by loosening or tightening the straps.

What To Keep In Mind When Buying A Baby Carrier

Just like when you buy any new kind of baby gear, there are several things to think about when you are looking for the best baby carrier.

Comfort – Does it feel good? Would you be able to wear it for hours at a time? Will it hold your baby safely and allow them to be against you comfortably? These are all questions that you need to take into consideration as far as comfort goes.

Positions – Certain carriers can only let you carry your kid in certain positions. Make sure the carrier you want can be used in the manner you desire.

When and Where You Will Wear – Like I said above, a backpack carrier is great for hiking, but it probably would be too big and bulky to wear around the home, or to the store for that matter. Make sure you get the right carrier for the locations you intend to use it in.

The Good: As it says in its name, the Ergo can carry a baby in a variety of positions and allows you to put your baby on your front or back. This positional variety makes it a great choice for lots of different activities, whether you are at home or on the go.

The Bad: It can be a bit tricky to get your child into the right position on your own, especially if you want to wear them on your back. While it is possible to get them in solo, it’s probably a better idea to have your partner help you out.

The Long and Short of It: This carrier, which you can view here, is a good choice for someone who isn’t sure exactly when and where they’ll wear their baby since it can be used with such flexibility.

2. Backpack: Kelty Tour 1.0 Child Carrier

The Good: If you are an outdoor enthusiast like me, then this will be the perfect backpack carrier. It has tons of storage space and will allow you to carry a combined weight of up to 50 pounds with comfort and ease.

The Bad: While it’s not a complete deal breaker, it would be nice to have a sun shade or canopy on this pack. This would allow you to keep your little one cool and in the shade when you are out on your adventures together.

The Long and Short of It: This carrier will allow you to carry tons of gear and your little bundle with comfort and ease. If you would like more information on this great backpack, you can find it here.

3. Modified Wrap: Baby K'tan Original Baby Carrier

The Good: The Baby K’tan gives you the comfort of a wrap, without all the crazy wrapping madness! You simply separate the loops and spread them around your baby to create a cozy little nest for them to rest, which is honestly the best! If you would like more info on this great system, you can find it here.

The Bad: The breathable fabric, while really comfortable, will start to stretch after heavy use. You’ll need to make sure that you continuously check that your baby is safe and secure in the carrier.

The Long and Short of It: All the comfort of a wrap without the hassle, the Baby K’tan is a great way to carry your baby.
